Most of what shapes our lives doesn’t happen in grand moments or sweeping changes. It happens in ordinary choices we make each day.
In the busyness of life, it’s easy to operate on autopilot and forget we create our lives one day at a time through the choices we make. Sometimes we don’t realize we’re operating on autopilot until we suddenly “wake up” and realize we’re not making progress on the things that matter most. Busyness can give us a false sense of progress if we don’t take time to pause and reflect on where we are and where we want to be.
Your ability to choose what is best for your life is your greatest power and means of shaping your life from the inside out, one choice at a time.
Empowering choices are in alignment with what is most important to you, affirm your sense of worth and freedom, boost your energy, and help you move forward. Disempowering choices do the opposite. They may be conscious or unconscious, but they always have an effect.
An empowering choice might look like taking five minutes to reset before engaging with others when you feel stressed or saying no or not now when there is pressure to do more and you don’t have the capacity for more. Even though they differ in size, each one strengthens your ability to shape your day and your life.
Even when it doesn’t feel like it, indecision is a choice, one that keeps us from making progress. Indecision begins with small things and can become a way of life through declarations like “I don’t care,” “It doesn’t matter,” or “You decide.”
Life can become overwhelming to the point that it’s easier to delay a decision or let others decide for us, and that may not be in our best interest.
Living one day at a time is a practice of awareness. It’s a way of noticing what you’re choosing and why you’re choosing it. It’s a way of reclaiming your ability to shape your life instead of being carried by habit, busyness, or indecision.
If this topic resonates with you, begin by paying attention to the choices you make each day and the impact they have. When you pay attention to your daily choices, you begin to see patterns. You notice where your energy goes, what supports you, what drains you, where you’ve been intentional, and where you’ve been operating on autopilot.
